Although I find canvas is my favorite surface to paint on, large canvas’ can be expensive. Some times I just need to paint large, I enjoy the physicality of the process and the impact of the finished work. Having the urge to work big for me is like needing to see the sea, or put on a piece of music first thing in the morning and having a dance. At around £6 for a 3′ x 4′ board as shown below, painting on thin mdf has kept me painting when funds are low. I also buy sample pots of paint for £1 from Wilko to plot things out and then paint over with better quality paints. Keeping things affordable means I feel relaxed about taking risks. The painting below is in progress.
